KUNMING, Sept. 8 (Xinhua)-Chinese and international guests gathered in Kunming, Yunnan, to discuss AI cooperation within the Global South.
AI is rapidly integrating with various industries, unleashing new drivers for economic and social development.
“AI is quickly reshaping industrial landscapes, improving service delivery efficiency, and optimizing resource allocation. By using AI responsibly, we can create new job opportunities for young people, bridge the digital divide, and promote South-South cooperation in knowledge and innovation,” said Jonathan Titus Williams, Deputy Minister of Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Planning and Economic Development.

“The integration of AI and media is an inevitable trend, and AI is already reshaping journalism and storytelling. However, in the Global South, many news organizations still lack infrastructure—stable internet, sufficient computing power, and secure cloud services,” said Ko Ko, Chairman of the Myanmar Narrative Think Tank. He believes the solution lies in strengthening South-South cooperation. For Myanmar, China’s role is particularly important, as Chinese companies are not only major providers of telecommunications infrastructure and AI monitoring systems but also potential partners for expanding language technology and local data resources.
“In recent years, the Global South has achieved a collective rise in the wave of globalization. As the world’s largest developing country and a natural member of the Global South, China is promoting the common prosperity of the Global South through specific cooperation, plans, and actions, advocating for inclusive economic globalization, always demonstrating an open mind, and bringing growth momentum to the Global South with practical actions,” said Zhu Zhaoying, an expert committee member of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology’s National AI Standards Working Group and Dean of the Shanghai Institute of AI for Industry. He believes that by strengthening joint technology research, data sharing, and capacity building, the Global South can collectively tackle key technical challenges such as multilingual models and low-cost computing power, and enhance its independent AI development capabilities.

During the forum, Xinhua News Agency launched AIGC-Safe, a comprehensive content and model security service platform called “Large Model Security Guard.” This product adheres to the philosophy of “using AI to protect AI, and using large models to combat large models,” continuously strengthening technological innovation and expanding application scenarios to provide a solid security foundation for digital transformation.
The 2025 Global South Media and Think Tanks High-level Forum was held in Yunnan from September 5th to 9th, co-hosted by Xinhua News Agency, the Yunnan Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China, and the Yunnan Provincial People’s Government.
